Scored a 1st Gen iPhone for iDev

iDev | iOS | iPhoneThis is just awesome. I wanted to load OS 3.0 on my iPhone for development, but Apple warns against putting it on your daily iPhone since it is still in beta. What’s a developer to do when you only have one iPhone? Buying a new iPhone is out of the question since a) I don’t have the money for that and b) rumor has it the 3rd gen iPhones could be dropping as soon as next Tuesday (WWDC09).
I thought about picking up a 1st gen iPhone on eBay, but people are still asking way too much for a 2 year old iPhone, especially since the new ones are right around the corner. It would be silly to spend $150 on an old one when the new (allegedly) 16G will be $199.
I was talking to my Dad about the whole conundrum, and he mentioned that he still had his 1st gen iPhone hanging around. He picked up a 3G shortly after they were released. He was holding onto the old one in case he needed it for something. It’s been close to a year and he’s never used it since. So he gave it to me! Just awesome.
Now, I know what you’re thinking, if the iPhone OS 3.0 is released next week at WWDC, then can’t you just install it on your 3G? Yes, I can. But...I still would love to have a 1st gen iPhone for backwards compatibility testing. I am looking into game development and it makes sense to test games on the old and new platform with with 3.0 and 2.0. This way I can optimize the game for any platform. I might also have to pick up a 3rd gen too, but we’ll see.
